What is it Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has its’ origins in Chinese Medicine. It works through the insertion of extremely fine single use sterile needles into particular acu-points along body’s pathways called Meridians along which the Qi or energy flows around the body. Acupuncture stimulates the body’s own energy to promote healing.

Acupuncture is based on over 5,000 years of practice in Chinese Medicine and also in the Middle East and it is one of the oldest forms of medical practice in the world. Based on the Chinese Medical philosophy of the 5 elements and Ying Yang theory, pain or illness that affects your body occurs because the Qi or energy has become stagnated or disturbed.

To make an accurate diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine it is necessary to look at the big picture including all aspects of the patient’s life style, their body, soul and spirit. There are 7 emotions which are joy, grief sadness, fear, anger, fright and worry, all of which can cause disturbances to the flow of energy which in turn can result in stagnation, excess or deficiency of the Qi in the internal organs.

The World Health Organization has, based on proven evidence, recognised acupuncture as an effective way to treat 28 different medical conditions. There are also many other diseases, symptoms or conditions for which the therapeutic effect of acupuncture has been shown but for which further proof is needed.

Why use Acupuncture?

You don't need a medical condition to benefit from acupuncture. Acupuncture can actually be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Acupuncture can be used to help prevent some medical conditions rather than using it for relief only when pain strikes or ailments go too deep. Quite often people turn to acupuncture as a last resort after other alternative methods have failed to provide some kind of relief. Acupuncture helps to bring harmony and balance to the body and mind.
